Google says my business is temporarily closed: how to fix it

A customer searches for you and Google says "Temporarily closed", but you are open. Some people will simply call the next business. Here is how to find out why the label is there, remove it, and keep it from coming back, using Google's own help pages.

1. The short version

  • Reopen the profile. Edit profile, then Hours, then "Open with main hours", set your hours and Save.
  • Find out who changed it. Check managers, connected tools and Google updates on your profile. If someone else's report caused it, the label can come back.
  • Make your other details agree. Your website and other listings should show that you are open, with the same hours.

We describe each step from Google's own help pages, checked on 24 October 2026. Google renames menus now and then, so follow what you see on screen.

2. Why it matters

Google's page Mark your business as closed says your Business Profile displays as "Temporarily closed" or "Permanently closed" on Google Maps and Search. The same page says that for broad queries, temporarily-closed businesses can rank after open businesses, depending on factors such as business category, query type and how many matching businesses are temporarily closed.

So the label does two things at once: it tells people who search for your name that you are shut, and it can push you down when people search for what you do.

3. Why Google shows your business as temporarily closed

Cause 1: someone with access set it

The status is a setting on the profile. A co-owner, a former employee, an agency or a listing tool with manager access can set it, sometimes during a refit, a holiday or a seasonal break, and then forget to switch it back. Google says to use "Temporarily closed" if you are closed for more than 7 days, closed for the off-season, or closed indefinitely, and to set special hours if you are closed for 7 days or less. A short holiday marked as "Temporarily closed" is a common way to end up here.

Cause 2: a customer or another user suggested it

Google's Maps help page Mark a place reopened or closed on Google Maps says people who are familiar with a place can mark it as temporarily closed, and that this feedback helps Google Maps decide whether to change a place's operating status. Google adds that you can only edit business attributes in select countries and regions.

Cause 3: Google updated the profile from another source

Google's page on Google updates says users can suggest edits and that Google may update your profile using information from sources such as user reports and licensed content. It says Google notifies you about certain suggestions before publishing them, and that you have 4 days to accept or reject one after you are notified. If you don't respond, Google says it may publish the update if other public information, such as your business website, supports it. Google's closure page also says that if Google receives an update that a location is temporarily closed, you may get an email notification, so search your inbox for one.

Cause 4: your other information still says you are closed

A "closed until further notice" banner on your website, or an old post on a directory or social page, is the kind of public information that can back up a closure report. Google does not list every source it uses, so this point is our advice rather than a Google rule: make every place that mentions your business say you are open.

4. How to reopen your Business Profile

Google's page Mark your business as reopened says that when you reopen, your profile is no longer marked temporarily or permanently closed on Google Maps and Search. The steps for one profile:

  1. Go to your Business Profile, for example by searching for your business name while signed in, or at business.google.com.
  2. Select Edit profile, then Hours.
  3. In the "Business hours" section, next to "Hours", select Edit, then Open with main hours. If you don't want hours on your profile, Google offers "Open with no main hours".
  4. Tick each day you are open and set the hours with the dropdowns.
  5. Select Save.

If you manage several locations, Google says to sign in to Business Profile Manager, select the locations, then on the toolbar select Actions, Open, and in the dialog Mark as open.

One exception. Google says that if your business was marked permanently closed as part of a location or name change, you should not reopen it, but add a new business, which must be verified. Google says to contact it if you want your reviews moved to the new profile.

Not the owner? If you are a customer or a member of staff without access, Google's Maps help says you can open the place on Google Maps, select Suggest an edit, then Reopen, and submit.

5. Check that the change went through

Google's edit status page says edits show as Accepted, Pending ("Your edit is still under review") or Not approved. It says edits usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes it can take up to 30 days, and that Google might not approve changes if it can't confirm their accuracy. Rejected business information edits may be eligible for an appeal.

Once the edit is accepted, search for your business name on Google and open it on Google Maps on a phone. Both should show your hours and no closure label.

6. Keep it from coming back

  • Review who has access. In your profile settings, check the managers and remove anyone or any tool you don't recognise or no longer use.
  • Answer Google's notifications. Watch for emails and in-product notices about suggested edits, and respond within the 4 days Google gives you.
  • Use special hours for short closures. For holidays of 7 days or less, Google says to set special hours instead of "Temporarily closed". See how to add holiday hours to your Google Business Profile, and the Small Business Saturday checklist for Saturday 28 November 2026.
  • Show you are open everywhere. Remove old closure notices from your website, update your hours there, and post an update on your profile when you reopen after a long break.

If the profile is open but you still don't appear for your services, read why a business doesn't show up on Google Maps or what to check after a sudden drop in your Google Maps ranking. For a full pass over your profile, use the Google Business Profile checklist.
